While Nigerian films continue to struggle to break into the international market with sublime, universally coherent, and relatable films, Nigerian music has become globally recognized.
Every day, we hear and see our artists win global awards, top global charts, and compete in competitive spaces. It’s been a long and winding road. Now that we’ve arrived, it’s clear that the wave of rising performing and recording artists is here to stay.
Tems’ music was recently featured as the original soundtrack for the Black Panther sequel. Many Nigerians were enraged by this. It’s a fantastic development that we hope to capitalize on in the future.
1. Davido
David Adedeji Adeleke, better known by his stage name Davido, is a Nigerian musician, songwriter, and performer. He owns Davido Music Worldwide (DMW), where he signs and develops artists for the global stage.
2. King Sunny Ade
Chief Sunday Adegeye, also known as King Sunny Ade, is a Nigerian singer, songwriter, and Juju musician. He is the first Nigerian to receive a Grammy nomination for his 1983 studio album Synchro System. Sunny Ade starred in the American neo-noir drama film Breathless in 1983. He also appeared as a supporting actor in the 1987 comedy film O.C. and Stiggs.
3. Yemi Alade
Yemi Alade is a Nigerian singer with an Afrocentric style. She rose to prominence with her hit single Johnny, which served as an anthem for many Nigerian audiences for many years. Yemi Alade is widely regarded as one of the greatest African artists of all time.
Yemi Alade co-starred in the American musical film Black Is King with Beyoncé in 2020.
4. Jaywon
Iledare Oluwajuwonlo, better known as Jaywon, is a Nigerian singer, producer, composer, and performer. He is best known for his hit single This Year. He took home the Best Recording award at the 2015 Headies.
Jaywon appeared in Army of Thieves, an American heist film, in 2021.
