Hollywood actor Matthew Lawrence has shared his encounter with a notable film director.
On the most recent episode of his “Brotherly Love” podcast, Lawrence talked about his own experiences with sexual harassment in Hollywood. He revealed that he was fired from an agency after refusing to strip for a director working on a Marvel Studios project.
The 43-year-old actor recalled his experience from the program's episode, in which he and his co-hosts, actors Joey and Andrew Lawrence, discussed the negative aspects of the Hollywood entertainment business.
“There have been many times in my life where I've been propositioned to get a huge role,” Lawrence said on the podcast.
“I've lost my agency because I went to the hotel room, which I can't believe they would send me to, of a very prominent Oscar award-winning director who showed up in his robe, asked me to take my clothes off and said he needed to take Polaroids of me.”
“And then if I did X, Y and Z, I would be the next Marvel character.
Lawrence alleged that his agency, whose name he did not disclose, ultimately fired him for leaving.
“I didn't do that, and my agency fired me because I left this director's room.”
“The one thing that's very interesting that doesn't get talked about enough in the #MeToo Movement is how this is a two-way street,” Lawrence said. “In fact, it's a three, maybe a four-way street.”
Lawrence went on to remark that there is a “double standard” when it comes to males confessing they have been the victim of sexual harassment, adding that a small number of guys in Hollywood have actually experienced it. He focused particularly on actor Terry Crews' claims that an agent had inappropriately touched him at a Hollywood party.
Joey Lawrence, an actor, agreed with Matthew's assessment, noting that when he had encountered comparable circumstances—and “there were plenty”—it came down to principal.
“Terry Crews comes out and says it, and people are laughing at him,” Lawrence said.
“People don't support him; they kick him out - why? Because he's a man that represents masculinity, and I think our society is less ready to hear that situation going on with men than they are with women.”
His brother, Joey, echoed Lawrence's sentiments, saying that when he has been placed in similar situations, of which “there were plenty,” it came down to principles.
“I just wasn't going to do it, you know?” Joey said. “And I lost out on a lot of parts, too. Big movie parts.”
At the age of four, Lawrence first gained attention for his roles in the 1993 film “Mrs. Doubtfire,” in which he costarred with the late robin Williams, and in the ABC sitcom “Boy Meets World,” in which he played the long-lost Jack Hunter. Lawrence also had the major part in the Joey and Andrew-starring family comedy “Brotherly Love,” which ran on the WB Network from 1995 to 1997.
