Alastair Maclean Darling was born in London on November 28, 1953. He was the eldest of Thomas and Anna (Maclean) Darling’s four children. His father was a structural engineer. He studied law at the University of Aberdeen in Scotland, where he was known as a Marxist.
In 1977, Alistair Darling joined the Labour Party, and a decade later, he was elected to the British Parliament.
