Ben Roy Mottelson was an American-Danish nuclear physicist who lived from July 9, 1926, to May 13, 2022. For his work on the non-spherical geometry of atomic nuclei, he received the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1975.

In July 1926, Mottelson was born in Chicago, Illinois, to Georgia (Blum) and engineer Goodman Mottelson. He attended Lyons Township High School in LaGrange, Illinois, and graduated with honours.

Mottelson graduated from Purdue University with a bachelor’s degree in 1947 and Harvard University with a doctorate in nuclear physics in 1950.

On the Sheldon Traveling Fellowship from Harvard, he travelled to Copenhagen and worked at the Institute for Theoretical Physics (later the Niels Bohr Institute).

He died on 13 May 2022, at the age of 95.
