Mr. Ross, the son of a carpenter, was born in Daytona Beach, Florida. While in the Air Force, he became interested in art and subsequently studied with William Alexander, whose own painting program, which airs on public television, is a competitor to Mr. Ross’s.

Jane Ross, Mr. Ross’s wife, died in 1993. He is survived by a son, Steven, of Ronkonkoma, Long Island, who is a Bob Ross instructor and appears on Mr. Ross’s show on occasion.

Mr. Ross’s program began in 1983, and since then, he has grown his business into a multimillion-dollar enterprise that includes how-to books, a line of painting supplies with his face on each pot of paint, and courses taught by teachers who have been educated in the Bob Ross technique.

Bob Ross, the bushy-haired host of public television’s “Joy of Painting” who turned his show’s success into an industry of painting books and materials, died on July 4. He was 52 years old at the time.

According to Walter J. Kowalski, CEO of Bob Ross Inc. in Sterling, Va., the reason was cancer.
