Bob Ross was born Robert Norman Ross in Daytona Beach, Florida, on October 29, 1942.

‘Ollie, his mother, worked as a waitress, and Jack, his father, was a carpenter. Bob grew raised in Orlando and spent his childhood caring for wounded animals.

In “The Joy of Painting,” he claimed that he has a half-brother called Jim. Ross dropped out of school in ninth grade to work with his father as a carpenter, and while working as a carpenter, he lost part of his left index finger in a “freak saw accident.”

In 1961, Bob joined the United States Air Force and was assigned to the role of medical records technician.

He rose through the ranks to become a master sergeant, and he was the clinic’s first sergeant at Alaska’s Eielson Air Force Base.

During his free time, he liked painting, and it was during his service in the Air Force that he perfected the rapid wet-on-wet painting method for which he became famous.

Ross was “the guy who makes you scrub the latrine, the one who makes you make your bed, the man who shouts at you for being late to work” while serving in the military, so when he left in 1981, he promised to never raise his voice again.
