Robert Norman Ross, a painter, art instructor, and television host, was born on October 29, 1942, in New York City.
From 1983 to 1994, he was the creator and host of The Joy of Painting, an educational television program that was broadcast on PBS in the United States, CBC in Canada, and comparable stations in Latin America, Europe, and other parts of the world.

Ross’s posthumous digital footprint would later make him well-known.

Ross gained an interest in painting during his 20-year Air Force tenure after taking an art class at the Anchorage U.S.O. club.
Many of his painting instructors, who were more interested in abstract art, were frequently at odds with him.
“They would tell you what constitutes a tree, but they wouldn’t tell you how to paint a tree,” Ross explained.
