Gregory Bright, a native of New Orleans who was born in 1954, was found guilty in 1974 at the age of 20 of second-degree murder. He was given a life sentence without the possibility of release, which he served at the Louisiana State Penitentiary.

Bright was given a fresh trial in 2001 following several years of appeals, based on the allegation that the prosecution had concealed evidence from the defense during his first trial.

Bright Gregory Release Date

Bright and Earl Truvia were released on June 24, 2003, following the dismissal of all charges by the Orleans Parish district attorney. They had been incarcerated for 27 1/2 years for a crime they did not commit. Bright received nothing from the State of Louisiana upon his release from prison—just a US $10 cheque and garbage bags filled with official documentation.

Speaking about his life after being released from prison and his unfair detention, Bright travels the United States. In addition, he appears in the third season of American Horror Story on FX, Tremé on HBO, and Memphis Beat on TNT.
