Britt’s attorneys claimed in the middle of 2000 that their client was criminally insane and that his mental state had seriously worsened, meaning he couldn’t be held accountable for his actions and required treatment.

By year’s end, at the prosecution’ request, a forensic mental assessment was conducted, finding Eugene Britt to be competent for trial and sane.

Eugene was found to be cognitively impaired following another psychological evaluation, which allowed the court to be lenient with him.

Britt received a second sentence of 245 years in prison on November 3. He broke down in tears as the verdict was announced, apologizing for his actions and pleading with the victims’ families for forgiveness.

Eugene was moved to the Indiana State Prison, which is 80 kilometers outside Chicago, following the trial. Britt, who is 63 years old, is still alive as of January 2021 and is incarcerated under the number “963641”.
