Cassper Nyovest claimed he almost signed a contract with Sony but decided against it because they allegedly asked him to change his name.

On a recent Secure the Bag episode on YouTube, he talked about that period of his life.

Together, Cassper and Liberty host programs designed to help those in the entertainment, sports, and arts industries become financially fit. Five episodes containing all of the sessions are available on YouTube.

The rapper, composer, businessman, record producer, amateur boxer, and so on said that he is from Maftown (Mahikeng) and that he traveled there to own his songs.

“It got so hard I also wanted to give up, I wanted to sign with Sony at that point and they wanted to give me R300,000 as an advance. I was so broke that I almost took the deal but there were two things we couldn’t agree to.

“One of them being that they wanted to own my masters, second, they wanted to change my name. So they wanted me to drop Nyovest because they said it sounded like a swear word. They just wanted to call me Cassper. I was like no, that is not going to work,” Cassper said.

At HHP’s burial funeral in 2018, Cassper remarked that HHP thought he may someday surpass Lil Wayne in popularity.

“My biggest dream at that point was to be signed to Jabba and he would always tell me at that point that I’m not an artist who should be signed, I could be a businessman. He would say I could be as big as Lil Wayne and I would be like, ‘This guy is so crazy. I’m hungry and I just want to release this album’.”
