Many are still mourning the loss of the late Miss U.S.A 2019, Cheslie Kryst.

Kryst was an “Extra” news agency correspondent and a former Miss USA. She was only 30 years old when she took her own life. Her body was found outside the 60-story Orion Condominium building in New York City where she lived.

On Wednesday morning, her autopsy results were made public.

According to sources, the New York City Office of Chief Medical Examiner listed Cheslie Kryst’s official cause of death as suicide.

Hours before she died, Kryst had posted a photograph on her Instagram with the caption, “May this day bring you rest and peace.”

A statement posted after her passing read: “In devastation and great sorrow, we share the passing of our beloved Cheslie, Her great light was one that inspired others around the world with her beauty and strength. She cared, she loved, she laughed and she shined. Cheslie embodied love and served others, whether through her work as an attorney fighting for social justice, as Miss USA and as a host on EXTRA. But most importantly, as a daughter, sister, friend, mentor and colleague – we know her impact will live on.”

As was previously reported, her grandfather, Gary Simpkins, told the New York Daily News that Kryst was “a light that shined so brightly.”

“To be extinguished so fast is just devastating,” he said. Kryst had been born in Michigan but was raised in Rock Hill, South Carolina. She later moved to New York City.

“So hard to imagine one minute they’re here and one minute they’re not,” he went on. “And you know that the only [way] you’ll ever see them again is when you yourself pass away.”

“She was a fantastic person,” he continued. “She was kind. She was generous. She felt for other people. She tried to help other people. She was just one of those rare people that had a heart for people.”

Extra released a statement, saying, “Our hearts are broken. Cheslie was not just a vital part of our show, she was a beloved part of our Extra family and touched the entire staff. Our deepest condolences to all her family and friends.”

  1. Cheslie Kryst was so amazing! She was so lovely and had an inward and outward beauty. I had an interaction with Miss USA 2019 Cheslie Kryst and Miss Universe 2019 Zozi during an Instagram session that they had on Instagram Live. When we had the lockdown in the USA due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Cheslie and Zozi asked the public how they were spending their time inside during the COVID-19 lockdown. I told them that I was spending my time inside getting closer to Jesus. They loved my answer to their question, especially Cheslie. Cheslie then mentioned my name and said that my answer was inspiring. She then elaborated further on my answer and told me that she use to attend Elevation Church in North Carolina. I developed a bond with Cheslie then. I realized then that not only were Cheslie and I pageant sisters from another pageant, we were sisters in Jesus Christ as well. I took her death really hard after hearing about it. I heard that Cheslie was bullied, trolled etc. mercilessly online via social media. I hope that it didn’t cause her to take her life. I love everyone no matter their race, nationality, creed or skin color as God commands me to do do. I reach out to the sick, disabled, elderly and homeless no matter their race, nationality, creed or skin color to spread love and brighten their day.
