David Edwin Birney was an American actor and director born on April 23, 1939, in Washington, D.C., United States.

Commonly referred to as David Birney, his career included performances in both contemporary and classical roles in theatre, film, and television.

He was renowned for having played the title role in the television series Serpico. He further starred in Bridget Loves Bernie, an early 1970s TV series about interfaith marriage.

The series also starred Meredith Baxter, whom Birney married after the series ended. From 1982 until 1983, Birney portrayed Dr. Ben Samuels in St. Elsewhere.

Birney graduated from West High School in Cleveland.

He also held a B.A. degree from Dartmouth College with “High Distinction” in English literature, and English Honors. Additionally, he had an M.A. in theatre arts, acting, and directing from the University of California, Los Angeles.

Meanwhile, Birney passed away on April 27, 2022, four days after his 83rd birthday.
