Emily England Clyburn was born in Berkeley County, close to Moncks Corner, and grew up in a small town before becoming well-known.

For 58 years, Emily was wed to Jim Clyburn, a Democratic representative from South Carolina who was also a retired educator in the United States.
While attending South Carolina State University for college, they became friends.
