Andy Devine, who starred in Emmerdale, died at the age of 79.

According to public documents, he died on January 27, which was confirmed today (May 30).

Devine, whose given name was Peter, appeared on the ITV serial for ten years in the early 2000s as Shadrach Dingle, the husband of Faith Dingle and father of Chas Dingle.

In 2000, he joined the Dingle family and left in July 2010, when his character was killed off amid a heartbreaking alcohol abuse subplot.

But Shadrach wasn’t his only appearance on the soap. Devine had played a separate character for two episodes two years before joining the Dingle family – Baz Bradstone.

He was well noted for his roles as Bernard in Queer as Folk on Channel 4 and as a Draconian Guard in the Doctor Who serial ‘Frontier in Space.’

His long and illustrious career began in 1973 when he made his first appearances on Doctor Who.

After that, he appeared in shows like Cardiac Arrest, Where The Heart Is, The Seven Eleven, and, most recently, the BBC dramedy Linda Green in 2007.

“I had no desire to be an actor; instead, I wanted to be a pirate. In truth, I’m still living on a yacht, moored off the coast of West Yorkshire “In 2010, he told the Manchester Evening News about it.
