The Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lt.-Gen. , has been petitioned by the Ekikienkpong family of the Idum Mbube community in Ogoja, Cross River, regarding the alleged murder of their son, .

The officers from the Nigerian Army's Ogoja Battalion were charged with killing Okpe by the victim's relatives.

In the appeal, the family claimed that on March 17, 2023, the day before the governorship and house of assembly elections, troops under the command of Maj. Olayinka Olaoye shot and killed the 37-year-old man on the grounds of the hotel.

The family asked the COAS to make sure those responsible were brought to justice after condemning the suspected murder of Okpe, a significant power bike dealer in Cross River.

In the appeal, dated April 15, which was signed by E. E. Osim of the Advocate Legal Chamber in Calabar, it was also emphasized how important it is to prevent a few individuals from tarnishing the reputation of the Nigerian Army.

Before his suspected murder, the deceased was believed to have been married and the father of three kids.

The soldiers, who were apparently hired by the deceased's business acquaintances, were believed to have been following him to the hotel before shooting him to death.

The petition said that after checking into the hotel, the deceased went to check on his elderly parents and some of his companions were earlier detained by the army.

‘After checking in at the hotel, our brother left to visit his aged parents and some family members, leaving the team he travelled to settle. Immediately he left, soldiers arrived at the hotel, demanding Joe amidst heavy shooting, which sent everyone scampering for safety,” the petition reads.
“Since he was not around, all his friends were arrested and taken to an unknown destination with their phones impounded while detailing a mole for surveillance.
“Immediately after he drove in, Maj. Olayinka and his men arrived. He was shot in the hip while trying to alight from his car.
“After he collapsed on the floor, they advanced closer and opened fire at close range and he died instantly, his car was ransacked, and cash carted away,” it stated.
