A massive explosion rocked one of Cuba’s most exclusive five-star hotels, killing at least eight people and injuring more than 30.

According to local officials, the explosion at the Saratoga Hotel in Old Havana on Friday was caused by a gas leak.

The historic five-story structure was set to reopen four days after the pandemic.

It is now in ruins, with much of the outer wall ripped away.

People trapped under the debris are being sought out by search and rescue teams. The injured are being treated at hospitals in the area.

“I thought [the explosion] was an earthquake,” said Yazira de la Caridad, who lives a block away from the hotel.

A school directly behind the hotel was unaffected, and local officials confirmed that all of its students were safely evacuated.

President Miguel Diaz-Canel of Cuba paid a visit to the damaged site, which is located directly across from the government’s old congressional building. “It wasn’t a bomb or an attack, it was an unfortunate accident,” the president said.

The incident occurred just as the country’s tourism industry was beginning to recover from two difficult years caused by the Covid-19 pandemic.

During much of this time, the Saratoga Hotel was closed for renovations.

After celebrities like Madonna, Beyonce, and Mick Jagger stayed there during the thaw between Havana and Washington under President Barack Obama, the 19th-century building has become synonymous with visiting celebrities in Havana.
