In January 2011, the Apple board of directors approved the third medical leave of absence requested by Steve Jobs. Cook was responsible for the majority of Apple’s daily operations, while Jobs was responsible for the majority of the company’s strategic decisions.

Cook was appointed Apple Inc.’s new CEO on August 24, 2011, after Jobs resigned as CEO to become chairman of the board. Jobs passed away on October 5, 2011, six weeks following his pancreatic cancer diagnosis.
