(born April 3, 1961) is an American actor, comedian, writer, producer, and singer.

He rose to fame on the sketch comedy show Saturday Night Live, for which he was a regular cast member from 1980 to 1984.

Murphy has also worked as a stand-up comedian and was ranked No. 10 on Comedy Central's list of the 100 Greatest Stand-ups of All Time.

Murphy was born in Brooklyn, New York City and raised in the borough's Bushwick neighbourhood.

His mother, Lillian Murphy (nee Laney, later Murphy Lynch 1939-2000), was a telephone operator, and his father, Charles Edward Murphy (1940-1969), was a transit police officer and an amateur actor and comedian.

Netflix may be paying Eddy Murphy around $70 million. The comedian dropped out of the comedy scene years ago but is now talking with Netflix about an undisclosed number of comedy specials, reports TMZ.
