Famous Mzansi actress, Jo-Anne Reyneke has revealed that she is and has always been a supporter of people with hearing disabilities after she was met with backlash from critics for being insensitive.
After posting a humorous video of a sign language interpreter to highlight the problem of unfit individuals and con artists getting jobs as sign language interpreters, the actress faced outrage on social media.
In response to the backlash, the thespian in a press statement explained that she was only shedding light on the disturbing increase in unqualified interpreters and how they are able to pass through poor vetting processes.
“While I understand the community has suffered a great deal of discrimination, and the need for advocacy and education outside the community is vital, I was not making fun of individuals who are deaf or hard of hearing but rather shining light on the disturbing trend of scam interpreters being poorly vetted and ending up on television.”
