When he was in elementary school, his family moved to Carson, California. He has three other siblings, Damon, Kenn and Deborah. A DNA that was conducted showed that her mother had an Akan ancestry and her father had Igbo ancestry.
Forest Whitaker went to Palisades Charter High School where he played football and joined the choir. Whitaker graduated from High School in 1979 and entered California State Polytechnic, Pomona on a football scholarship.
He stopped playing football and switched to music due to a back injury he sustained. He eventually changed his major to drama and graduated from the University of Southern California with a BFA in acting in the year 1982.
Forest Whitaker starred in many films including The Color of Money, Platoon, Bloodspot, Bird, Downtown and The Crying Game among the lots. He was a member of the cast that won the first ever National Board Of Review Award For Best Acting by an ensemble for Robert Altman’s film in 1994.
In addition to the numerous awards, he has received many honours which included being paid a tribute at the Festival of American Film in 2005.
Whitaker founded the Whitaker Peace and Development Initiative, a non-governmental organization in 2012. He was also inducted as UNESCO Goodwill Ambassador for Peace and Reconciliation on June 21, 2011. In politics, he spoke on behalf of Senator Barack Obama and also received a chieftaincy title in Imo State, Nigeria.
Whitaker married actress Keisha Nash in 1996 and they have four children together.
