Martha Helen Stewart, an American writer, television personality, and retail businesswoman, was born on August 3, 1941. She developed Martha Stewart Living Omnimedia and became successful in a number of businesses, including publishing, television, merchandising, and online shopping.

She is the publisher of the Martha Stewart Living magazine, the author of multiple best-selling books, and the host of the syndicated television shows Martha (which aired from 2005 to 2012) and Martha Stewart Living (which aired from 1993 to 2004).

Stewart was found guilty of felonies in connection with the ImClone stock trading case in 2004; she spent five months in federal prison before being freed in March 2005.

There were rumors that the tragedy would practically bring an end to Stewart’s media empire, but in 2005 she launched a rebound effort, and in 2006 her business generated a profit. In 2011, Stewart returned to the board of Martha Stewart Living Omnimedia, and in 2012 she once more assumed the position of corporate chair. Sequential Brands purchased the business in 2015.
