Mindy Kaling, full name Vera Mindy Chokalingam, was born June 24, 1979 in Cambridge, Massachusetts, United States. She was an American actress, comedian, and author known for her offbeat humour, which she displayed in projects such as the television show The Mindy Project (2012–17). Kaling was born to Indian immigrants.
Mindy Kaling’s father, an architect, and mother, an obstetrician-gynecologist, met in a hospital in Nigeria where they both worked, and they immigrated to the United States in 1979. Kaling grew up watching televised sketch comedies like In Living Color and Saturday Night Live.
Mindy Kaling majored in theatre at Dartmouth College (B.A., 2001) and was a member of both the all-female a cappella group Rockapellas and the campus improv troupe the Dog Day Players.
She also created the popular comic Badly Drawn Girl for the university newspaper. Kaling moved to Brooklyn with her college friend Brenda Withers after graduation.
