Paolo Macchiarini, a thoracic surgeon, was born in Basel, Switzerland, on August 22, 1958. He is renowned for his groundbreaking work in regenerative medicine, particularly his attempts to create artificial windpipes using a combination of synthetic materials and patient stem cells.
His objective was to devise a procedure for substituting these man-made structures for damaged or non-functional tracheas, thereby lessening the necessity for conventional organ transplants and the related problems of scarcity of donors.

Following the world’s first stem cell-supported synthetic trachea transplants in 2011, Macchiarini became well-known. To create a functional organ, an artificial windpipe made of synthetic materials was implanted, and the patient’s stem cells were then coated on it.

However, accusations of unethical behaviour and worries about patient safety cast doubt on Macchiarini’s work. Patient complications, misleading information, and ethical concerns were a few of the major concerns.
