Gray played college baseball for the Vanderbilt Commodores while he was a student at Vanderbilt University. Gray was chosen by the Athletics in the first round of the 2011 MLB Draft. In 2013, he made his Major League Baseball debut. In 2014, he twice earned the American League Pitcher of the Month Award. In 2015, he was selected as an MLB All-Star. Gray was acquired by the Yankees in 2017 and was traded to the Reds prior to the 2019 season.
