Tony Staley was the former Liberal Party president who was at the heart of the party's leadership struggles for decades. Mr. Staley earned a law degree from Melbourne University, where he was involved in student government.
While serving as a minister in Malcolm Fraser's cabinet for four years, the intelligent politician and political assassin found inspiration and fearlessness in poetry.
Anthony (Tony) Allan Staley was born on May 15, 1939, and died in Melbourne, where he had recently had a visit by current Liberal Party heavyweights, including Opposition Leader Peter Dutton.
Mr Dutton said in a statement on Wednesday that Mr Staley contributed to Mr Fraser's rise to the Liberal leadership and the downfall of the Whitlam administration in “two pivotal ways.”
Former Prime Minister John Howard expressed his condolences on the passing of his friend and former colleague, whom he characterized as “a devoted servant of and contributor to” the Liberal Party.
He died at the age of 83. Staley's funeral will be held soon.
