Zoleka Mandela is the founder of the Zoleka Mandela Foundation, which is a social upliftment foundation that was established in 2013. The foundation aims to educate people about social responsibilities, breast cancer and road safety.

The foundation also seeks to assist young people with volunteerism, accountability and personal growth.

Zoleka’s daughter died in a car crash in 2010 and at the time, she was recovering from mental health issues. She is a breast cancer survivor herself and has battled many addictions to alcohol and drugs and has also struggled with sexual abuse, as is detailed in her 2013 autobiography titled, “When Hope Whispers”.

In sharing her story, Mandela hopes that her life will inspire people to follow their dreams despite life’s frequent hardships and setbacks.

In 2016 Zoleka was chosen as one of the BBC’s 100 Women.

She is also a United Nations global ambassador on non-communicable diseases (NCDs) and child health.

Is Zoleka Mandela related to Nelson Mandela?

Zoleka Mandela and the late Nelson Mandela are related. She is his granddaughter. Zoleka was born in 1980 and her parents are Zindzi Mandela and Zwelibanzi Hlongwane.

Her mother’s family are the Mandelas, who are direct descendants of King Madiba of the Thembu people. They serve as chieftains of Mvezo which is their ancestral chiefdom.
