James Alton McDivitt was a NASA astronaut who participated in the Gemini and Apollo programs. He was also an American test pilot, United States Air Force pilot, aeronautical engineer, and astronaut. In 1951, he enlisted in the USAF, and during the Korean War, he flew 145 combat missions.

He had a degree from the U.S. Air Force Experimental Test Pilot School At Edwards Air Force Base in California, he completed the Air Force’s Aerospace Research Pilot course and performed experimental test flights.

During his stint as a pilot, he acquired more than 5,000 flying hours. As a part of NASA’s second astronaut class, McDivitt was chosen for selection as an astronaut in September 1962.

On October 13, 2022, in Tucson, Arizona, McDivitt passed away peacefully. He was 93 years old. The National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) broke the heartbreaking news of his passing in a press statement. The group showed homage for the retired astronaut who was instrumental in several missions.
