The son of Odile (née Monod) and Swiss doctor Paul Godard, was born on December 3, 1930, in Paris's 7th arrondissement.

Manfred Eicher, the founder, and CEO of the German record label ECM Records had an enduring friendship with Godard.

The company issued the soundtracks to Godard's films Histoire(s) du cinéma and Nouvelle Vague (ECM NewSeries 1600-01). (ECM NewSeries 1706).

Over the years, this partnership deepened, and Godard eventually gave ECM permission to use movie stills on record covers. Eicher also took over the musical direction of Godard including Allemagne 90 neuf zéro, Hélas Pour Moi, JLG, and For Ever Mozart.

His movies have used music from ECM albums; the In Praise of Love soundtrack, for instance, makes heavy use of Ketil Bjrnstad and David Darling's album Epigraphs.
