Jerónimo Saavedra Acevedo was a politician and academic from Spain. He was Canary Islands President twice, from 1983 to 1987 and again from 1991 to 1993.

After the establishment of the autonomous community’s system by the 1978 Constitution, he became the first President of the Canary Islands, in charge of structuring the regional administration and the islands’ democratic transition.

Saavedra was also Minister of Public Administration in Spain between 1993 and 1995, and Minister of Education and Science in Spain between 1995 and 1996.

He was also a member of the Congress of Deputies in the constituent legislature until 1983, a senator twice, and the mayor of his hometown Las Palmas de Gran Canaria between 2007 and 2011. After coming out as gay in 2000, Saavedra rose to prominence as the first gay politician in Spain to hold several high-level positions.

Jerónimo Saavedra passed away on November 21, 2023, at the age of 87. Astrid Pérez, the President of the autonomous Parliament, announced his death. Jerónimo died of natural causes.
