Jill Dando’s parents were Jack Dando, who died in February 2009, and Winifred Mary Jean Hockey, who died in August 1928.

Nigel, her older brother, was a journalist for BBC Radio Bristol before retiring in 2017. He was a journalist in local newspapers before joining the BBC. Jill grew up in the Somerset town of Weston-super-Mare. In the 1980s, she relocated to London.
