After the team was given a hardship exemption, Johnson signed a 10-day contract with the Boston Celtics on December 22, 2021, to play for the team that originally selected him. The biggest span in NBA history—19 years and 305 days—separated his debut that night against the Cleveland Cavaliers from his previous appearances with the Celtics. Together with Dirk Nowitzki, he became the second player to score a basket with the same team at the ages of 20 and 40 when he made his lone basket during that outing.
