In addition to 83 counts of reckless endangerment and one case of endangering an aircraft, Joseph David Emerson, who is 44 years old is currently charged with murder. Pilot Joseph Emerson, holds a pilot’s certificate issued by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA).

Emerson abandoned his loved ones in October 2023 when it was discovered that, while off-duty and in the cockpit of a flight to San Francisco, he had attempted to deliberately shut down the plane’s engines.

According to jail records, there were 83 passengers on board the aircraft on Sunday night. Despite allegedly sitting on the flight deck jump seat, records show that Emerson was a legitimate occupant of the craft’s cockpit.

According to later reports, Emerson was flying Flight 2059 while not on duty. Furthermore, a statement from Alaska Airlines, states that the suspect “unsuccessfully attempted to disrupt the operation of the engines.” At this point, it’s unclear why he did it.
