Judge Delays Agreement To Not File Charges Against US President Joe Biden’s Son, Hunter As He Pleads Not Guilty To Tax Charges

On Wednesday, July 26, the judge overseeing the case stated she needed more time to consider Hunter Biden’s proposed bargain with prosecutors to admit guilt to tax charges and dismiss a firearms charge. This put a stop to their arrangement.

The information indicates that Hunter’s legal issues will continue to gather attention and could harm the president’s reelection bid in 2024. The arrangement had drawn criticism from his main competitor, former President Donald Trump, as well as Trump’s Republican colleagues in Congress for favouring the president’s son unjustly.

The judge’s decision took an unexpected turn during what was anticipated to be a routine plea hearing, transforming it into a lengthy affair involving discreet negotiations between lawyers and probing inquiries from U.S. District Court Judge Maryellen Noreika.

Declaring, “I cannot accept the plea agreement today,” she requested the parties to present arguments on why she should approve it.

This implies that Hunter Biden’s lawyers and prosecutors may still persuade her to accept the deal as previously negotiated or modify it to meet her requirements. Judge Noreika emphasized that she did not wish to simply rubber-stamp a plea deal without careful consideration.

During the hearing, Hunter Biden pleaded not guilty to charges of failing to pay taxes on over $1.5 million of income in 2017 and 2018, despite allegedly owing more than $100,000. In a separate case, he faces charges of unlawfully owning a firearm while being addicted to and using a controlled substance, classified as a felony.

Disagreements arose in court between Hunter Biden’s lawyers and prosecutors regarding whether the deal they had reached would shield him from facing charges for other potential crimes. At one point, defense lawyer Chris Clark even stated that the deal was “null and void.”

Initially, Hunter Biden insisted that he would not plead guilty to the tax charges without a deal in place to avoid prosecution on the gun charge. However, his stance changed after extensive negotiations between his legal team and prosecutors while Judge Noreika waited in her chambers.

Ultimately, the parties agreed that the deal would only grant immunity to Hunter Biden for a limited set of tax, drug, and firearm offenses.

Republicans have persistently accused Hunter Biden of leveraging his father’s political influence for personal gain in his dealings in Ukraine and China. However, U.S. Attorney David Weiss of Delaware, a Trump appointee, conducted an investigation that yielded no evidence supporting these claims.

White House spokesperson Karine Jean-Pierre affirmed President Biden’s support for his son, emphasizing that Hunter Biden is a private citizen, and the matter at hand is of a personal nature.

Throughout his career, Hunter Biden has engaged in various professions, including lobbying, law, consulting, investment banking, and artistry. He has openly discussed his struggles with addiction, including battles with alcoholism and crack cocaine use.
