Ariyibi Ahmed Olaseinde, a widower, and Akanbi Silifat Tunrayo, a divorcee, were detained by agents of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency, NDLEA, at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, MMIA Ikeja Lagos, for allegedly trying to export 14.4 kilograms of cocaine covered in lace and ankara fabrics. Both men were traveling to Saudi Arabia for the lesser hajj.
According to a statement made by the anti-drug agency's spokeswoman, Femi Babafemi, Ariyibi was detained on Thursday, April 20, at MMIA Terminal 2's screening area when passengers on Qatar Airways were being cleared to depart for Medina, Saudi Arabia, via Lagos and Doha.
‘'When his carry-on bag was checked, four sets of white lace material with linings of substance that tested positive to Cocaine weighing 11.50kg were discovered.
The suspect who claimed to be a widower and an advertising practitioner said his original plan was to ingest the drugs but had to change his mind after failed attempts to swallow bitter cola, which he was using to practice the process.
He is expected to be paid One Million, Eight Hundred Thousand Naira (N1,800,000) upon successful delivery of the consignment in Medina, Saudi Arabia.” the statement read
NDLEA operatives stationed at Terminal 2 of the airport also detained Mrs. Silifat Tunrayo Akanbi on Wednesday, April 18, as she was clearing outbound passengers traveling on Qatar Airways from Lagos via Doha to Jedda, Saudi Arabia, who were carrying 2.90kg of cocaine.
Six sheets of cocaine totaling 2.90kg were found in her hand luggage after a search, according to Babafemi, which was conducted using fibers from ankara.
‘'Preliminary investigation revealed that the suspect is a divorcee and a trader who used to hawk cloths around Awoyaya area of Ajah, Lagos.
The NDLEA spokesperson also disclosed that NDLEA agents working with courier services had stopped two narcotics shipments headed for the United Arab Emirates that included ecstasy and skunk. He claimed that although the skunk was disguised in a microcontroller, the ecstasy pills were put in a gold bridal gown.
