Madison Cawthorn was born on August 1, 1995, in Asheville, North Carolina, to Priscilla and Roger Cawthorn. He was home-schooled through 12th grade in Hendersonville, North Carolina. He played football with the Ashville Saints, a league for home-schooled high school kids. He also worked at a Chick-fil-A restaurant as a youngster.

Cawthorn was seriously injured while returning from a spring-break trip to Florida in 2014 when he was18 years old. When his close friend Bradley Ledford fell asleep behind the wheel of a BMW X3 SUV near Daytona Beach, Florida, he was a passenger.

Cawthorn’s feet were on the dashboard when the SUV crashed into a concrete barrier. Cawthorn stated in a 2017 speech that Ledford abandoned him “to perish in a fiery tomb,” but Ledford officially denied this claim in 2021, claiming that he saved Cawthorn from the wreck once he had evacuated the truck.

Cawthorn confirmed in his statement that he had “no recall from the accident,” but Ledford stated that he helped in the rescue of an unconscious Cawthorn.

Cawthorn said he was “announced dead on the site” of the accident at the same 2017 address, although the official accident report described him as “incapacitated.”
Cawthorn was largely paralyzed as a result of the tragedy, and he now uses a wheelchair.
