Magawa Rat is dead. The Tanzanian Rat born in 2014 died at the age of 8. He was born in Tanzania, socialized, and moved to Siem Reap, Cambodia in 2016 to begin his bomb-sniffing career.
Over his years of working as a bomb sniffer, he has saved many lives and has received numerous awards for his hard work.
“His contribution allows communities in Cambodia to live, work, and play; without fear of losing life or limb,” the nonprofit APOPO said Tuesday.
Magawa retired the last year 2021. According to his caretakers, he was living happily until his death.
His caretakers said he remained playful until last week, when he slowed down and had less of an appetite.
Magawa has been described as one of the most successful explosive-sniffing rats at the organization.

The Magawa rat died of natural causes. Their lifespan is normally up to 8 years.
