Marcus Samuelson Biography

Kassahun Tsegie is well known as Marcus Samuelson was born in 1971 in Ethiopia. His father is called Tsegie who is an Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahedo Church priest.

His mother passed away due to a tuberculosis epidemic when he was three years old. As detailed in Samuelsson’s appearance on Anthony Bourdain: Parts Unknown he and his elder sister, Fantasie, were divided from their family during the turmoil of the Ethiopian Civil War, which started in 1974.

Later, the siblings were adopted by Ann Marie and Lennart Samuelsson who is a homemaker and a geologist, respectively, and they lived in Gothenburg, Sweden.

His siblings’ names were changed to Marcus and Linda Samuelsson. They also have one adopted sister called Anna Samuelsson.

His biological father is called Tsegie who is the father of eight others (the chef’s half-siblings) and still lives in the Ethiopian village where Samuelsson was born.

After becoming attracted to cooking through his maternal grandmother in Sweden, Samuelsson researched at the Culinary Institute in Göteborg (Gothenburg) where he was brought up.

He apprenticed in Switzerland and Austria and then came to the United States in 1994 as an apprentice at Restaurant Aquavit.
