HMargaret Ferrier is a Scottish politician who has represented Rutherglen and Hamilton West as an MP since 2019, having previously held the position from 2015 to 2017. Ferrier was first elected to the House of Commons in the 2015 general election as the Scottish National Party (SNP) candidate.
In the general election of 2017, she was defeated by Labour Party candidate Ged Killen, but Ferrier later won it back.
Ferrier had previously run unsuccessfully for the Rutherglen South ward of South Lanarkshire Council in a 2013 by-election before being elected to Westminster (following the death of Cllr Anne Higgins).
Following Ferrier's suspension by the SNP on October 1 2020 for violating COVID-19 lockdown guidelines, Scottish First Minister Nicola Sturgeon demanded that Ferrier give up her parliamentary seat. Ferrier was taken into custody on January 4 , 2021, and charged with “culpable and reckless conduct. She later entered a guilty plea and received a community service sentence.
