Moana Jackson was a renowned New Zealand Māori lawyer who specialized in constitutional law, the Treaty of Waitangi, and international indigenous issues. He was born on October 10, 1945, in Hastings, New Zealand. Jackson belonged to the Ngāti Kahungunu and Ngāti Porou descent.
He served as the Director of Ngā Kaiwhakamarama I Ngā Ture (the Māori Legal Service) which he co-founded in 1987.
Jackson, for his immense contributions to legal scholarship around the Treaty and his public debates about the unpopular justice system of Māori, was awarded an honorary doctorate from Victoria University of Wellington in 2017.
However, he refused any official honors from the New Zealand government, stating his stance that, he would not accept them until the Treaty of Waitangi was fully accepted.
