Discrimination against Africans has been a long-time practice that sadly hasn’t been curbed despite several efforts over the years to do so. Presently at the 15th FINA world swimming competition, Nigerian athletes are at the receiving end of this act.

Again. According to the athletes, they have been harshly treated with contempt, right from the start when their Nigerian Passports were seen.

They have been excluded from participating in the Competition and the cause for disqualification hasn’t been made clear. According to the UEA, their reason was, one coach on the Nigerian team had tested positive for the Covid-19.

This however does not seem like enough reason to the team, as one British swimmer tested positive as well, but still proceeded to partake in the Competition.

Another official expressed his disappointment in a speech, mentioning how unfair it was that the whole team has been withdrawn, even after getting vaccinated and undertaking multiple PCR tests. Also, there were several other Nigerian athletes coming from different countries, who had no contact with the infected coach but were also denied participation.

The official wanted the nation to be aware of the discrimination they were facing over there, as the exclusion was not the only issue. There is also the issue of some teammates not being attended to medically, when the need arose.

Officials from the Nigeria Aquatics Federation could not give their official statement on the matter, however, as their board has been dissolved and they “do not want to be blamed for causing diplomatic problems between their country and the UEA”, an official disclosed. What do you think the officials should do about this issue and how can Nigerian athletes be treated better during foreign competitions like these?
