A 45-year-old Nigerian man has been detained by the Chandigarh Cybercrime Police for allegedly defrauding a woman of 2.91 lakh rupees on the pretence of getting married to her.

According to a statement released by the police on Wednesday, June 28, 2023, the suspect, identified as Peter Johnson of Lajpat Nagar in New Delhi, was detained as a result of a woman from Sector 39 B filing a complaint.

Through a matrimonial website, the accused had made contact with the victim.

He was found to be in possession of 27 ATM cards, 26 mobile phones, and 15 sim cards by police.

The complainant said she has a 12-year-old son and is working on getting a divorce from her husband.

According to the police, the woman had created a profile on a matrimonial website. On January 19, 2023, she received a WhatsApp message from someone claiming to be Vipan from Texas, America, who identified himself as a doctor.

They started chatting frequently and the caller eventually convinced her to marry him. He requested her passport details, which she sent via WhatsApp. Assuring her that he had prepared all the necessary legal documents, he informed her of his plan to visit India soon for their marriage.

The accused sent her an air ticket and informed her that he would arrive in India on February 13, 2023. On the same day, she received a call from a person named Shikha, who claimed to be a police officer from the Delhi Airport Authority.

Shikha informed the victim that Vipan had arrived in India but was carrying an excessive quantity of articles, dollars, and gold. Shikha demanded ₹36,000 from the victim to release the items. Trusting the caller, the victim transferred the money.

Two hours later, the victim received another call from the same person, requesting ₹2,55,800 to release the excess gold brought by Vipan. Believing the caller once again, the victim transferred the money. However, afterwards, the numbers of both Vipan and Shikha were switched off, indicating that she had been deceived.

Realizing that she had been tricked, the victim filed a complaint with the cyber police. A case of cheating and criminal conspiracy was registered on March 6 at the Cyber police station in Sector 17.

Following investigations, raids were conducted at Lajpat Nagar and Govind Puri in Delhi, leading to the arrest of the accused, Peter, on June 23. The police recovered the mobile phone used in the crime, as well as other mobile phones, SIM cards, and ATM cards from his possession.
