The Wimbledon men’s final is set to take place on Sunday, and top seed Novak Djokovic says he wouldn’t yet describe his friendship with Nick Kyrgios as a “bromance.”

The Australian tennis player Kyrgios, who will compete against the Serbian six-time champion in a thrilling final, made headlines in 2019 when he called Djokovic “cringeworthy” and said that he was driven by a need to be loved.

However, Kyrgios claims that after he criticized Djokovic’s treatment by border guards in his country before this year’s Australian Open, they have become so amicable that they even message each other on social media.

The world No. 40 admitted, “We definitely have a little bit of a bromance going on now, which is bizarre.

“Everyone is aware that there was a period of no love lost. I believe it was beneficial for the sport.

“Every time we played one other, in my opinion, there was anticipation. The media, those who were watching, and everything else found it interesting.

“With all the turmoil at the Australian Open, I felt like I was practically the only player to defend him.

“Respect, in my opinion, is something that must be earned. Not on the tennis court, but in a real-life situation when someone stands up for you, I believe.

“We actually message each other on DMs on Instagram now and stuff, it’s really weird. Actually, earlier in the week, he was like ‘hopefully I’ll see you Sunday’.”
