American serial killer James Opelton Bradley was born on September 8, 1962. He killed his stepdaughter in 1988 and two more women in North Carolina in 2013 and 2014.

Bradley killed Shannon Rippy Van Newkirk, 53, on April 5, 2014. A day before she turned 54, Van Newkirk was murdered. Two days later, her disappearance was reported.

Following a review of traffic camera footage, Bradley’s apartment, phone records, and truck were searched by police on April 15. Bradley, who repeatedly altered his account, said that Van Newkirk was in his truck when they got into a fight and that she then jumped out and fled.

Bradley was initially prosecuted for Van Newkirk’s murder. He was found guilty of second-degree murder on June 29, 2017, and his sentence was set at least 30 years and five months and up to 37 years and six months in jail.

Bradley was threatened with life in prison if he revealed where Van Newkirk’s body was found, but he declined. He was found guilty of first-degree murder on March 26, 2019, following Tucker’s death.

Bradley was condemned to life in prison without the possibility of release when the jury reached a stalemate during the sentencing phase, sparing his life.

Bradley’s incarceration is being carried out at Tabor City Correctional Facility.
