Sir Peter Reginald Frederick Hall CBE was an iconic English theatre, opera, and film director. He was born on November 22, 1930, in Bury St Edmunds, Suffolk. Hall’s journey in theatre began early in life and his influence on British theatre and beyond was well-known, with his career spanning decades.

Hall won a scholarship to The Perse School in Cambridge before furthering his studies at St. Catharine’s College, Cambridge, where he honed his skills, producing and acting in numerous plays and becoming a director in 1953.

Hall became the director of the National Theatre from 1973 to 1988. Unfortunately, Hall died at age 86.

Sir Peter Hall breathed his last on September 11, 2017 at University College Hospital, London, surrounded by his family. He died from pneumonia His obituary in The Times hailed him as “the most important figure in British theatre for half a century.”
