Gregory Peter, Obi CON, a politician and businessman from Nigeria, presided over Anambra State repeatedly from 2006 and 2014. He was selected in May 2022 by the Labour Party to represent Nigeria in the 2023 presidential election.
Born in Onitsha in 1961, Obi received his degree from the University of Nigeria in 1984. After that, he started a career in business and finance and eventually rose to many executive positions at banks.
Before leaving his position to enter politics, Obi headed Fidelity Bank in the early 2000s. In the 2003 race for governor, Obi's opposition from the All Progressives Grand Alliance was declared the winner in error. After three years of legal wrangling, Obi has proclaimed the victor, and he assumed office in March 2006.
Then, in November, he was impeached. Later, the impeachment was quashed, and he was reinstated to his position in February 2007. The judges again intervened and decided that Obi should be permitted to serve out the remainder of his four-year term even though he was once more removed from office when a new election was held in April 2007.
He was chosen to hold office for a second term in 2010. Under Obi's direction, the state's budget, educational system, and healthcare system all experienced improvements. Obi joined the Peoples Democratic Party after quitting the government, which helped him build a fresh reputation as an advocate for good governance and an important national political figure.
He was chosen as Atiku Abubakar's running mate in the vice presidential primary for the 2019 presidential election, however, he lost to incumbent President Muhammadu Buhari and Vice President Yemi Osinbajo. After abandoning the PDP in May 2022, Obi declared himself the LP's presidential candidate for the general elections of 2023.
