A murder and robbery spree that occurred in 1979 in Richmond, Virginia, was carried out by the brother trio of serial/spree murders, rapists, and thieves Linwood Earl Briley, James Dyral Briley Jr. (J.B.), and Anthony Ray Briley.

After killing a lady in 1971, Linwood spent a year in a reformatory. The three siblings went on a murdering rampage in their hometown of Richmond, Virginia, in 1979, killing at least eleven people with the assistance of an accomplice, Duncan Eric Meekins. Two potential victims got away safely.

James and Linwood received death sentences. The two older brothers and four other prisoners managed to escape from death row in 1984, but they were apprehended again in three weeks.

In 1984, Linwood was put to death by electric chair, and James followed suit in 1985. Both Duncan Meekins and Anthony Briley remain behind bars.

Three of the four first-degree murder charges against Anthony Ray Briley were related to the killings of the Barton family. He was given a life term plus an additional 119 years, with the prospect of release.

Since Anthony’s involvement in any of the killings could not be established, he was spared the death penalty. About 20 miles west of Staunton, Virginia, is the Augusta Correctional Center, where he is being held.
