Ray Stevenson, a British actor best known for his leading roles in the television series “Rome” and “Punisher: War Zone,” has passed away at the age of 58.

Stevenson passed away on Sunday, May 21, four days before turning 59, according to a statement from his publicist. No cause of death has been disclosed.

He reportedly had hospitalization on the island of Ischia while working on the Frank Ciota-directed movie Cassino on Ischia, according to the Italian daily La Repubblica.

We are saddened to learn about Ray Stevenson’s loss, wrote the Peter Mayhew Foundation on Twitter, which was founded by the actor who played Chewbacca in the Star Wars movies.

“You may recognize Ray as Baylon Skoll from the upcoming Ahsoka show on Disney+. You may also remember his work as the voice of mandalorian super commando Gar Saxon in The Clone Wars. Our sincerest condolences to his family.”

Stevenson, who was born in Lisburn, Northern Ireland, on May 25, 1964, started his acting career in the early 1990s by taking part in telefilms and TV shows across Europe.

He appeared in Paul Greengass’ 1998 drama The Theory of Flight alongside Helena Bonham Carter and Kenneth Branagh for his debut role in a major motion picture.

He played Dagonet, one of the Knights of the Round Table, in Antoine Fuqua’s 2004 adventure picture “King Arthur,” which was his first significant acting job.

Stevenson was cast as the mercenary Frank Castle in the 2008 Marvel movie “Punisher: War Zone,” which earned him a leading role.

Before Disney bought the rights to the Marvel world and subsequently reintroduced the character in the Netflix series “Daredevil,” the movie was released in North America by Lionsgate.

The Punisher was portrayed by Stevenson, who was the third actor to do so. The vigilante was portrayed by Dolph Lundgren for the first time in a 1989 straight-to-video picture.

Stevenson also made many small-screen appearances. From 2005 to 2007, he portrayed the Roman soldier Titus Pullo on the HBO historical drama Rome. Seven Emmys were given to the critically acclaimed sitcom throughout the course of its two seasons.

In the seventh season of the serial killer drama Dexter on Showtime in 2012, Stevenson portrayed Ukrainian mob member Isaak Sirko.

He played Marcus in the first “Divergent” movie, released in 2014. Stevenson continued to play the role in subsequent installments of the trilogy, “The Divergent Series: Insurgent” and “Allegiant.”

Stevenson played Volstagg in “Thor: Ragnarok” after “Divergent,” which also starred Chris Hemsworth, Tom Hiddleston, Cate Blanchett, Mark Ruffalo, and Idris Elba. In both “Star Wars: Rebels” (2016) and “Star Wars: The Clone Wars” (2020), he provided the voice of Gar Saxon.

He also played Blackbeard in Black Sails’ third and fourth seasons (2016 and 2017), as well as Othere in Vikings’ sixth season (2019).

He portrayed Scott Buxton in the Academy Award-winning movie “RRR,” which was one of his most recent appearances.

Aside from 2022, he has recently appeared in the films Memory and Das Boot. This year’s forthcoming “Star Wars” miniseries “Ahsoka” will include him as Baylan Skoll.
