American serial killer and rapist Richard Francis Cottingham was born on November 25, 1946, and between 1967 and 1980, he killed at least eighteen young women and girls in New York and New Jersey.

Since he was found guilty of three murders in Times Square that included mutilation, he went by the nicknames New York Ripper, Torso Killer, and Times Square Killer.

As a result of Cottingham’s confirmed killings, he was given multiple life sentences in New Jersey prisons after nine convictions and eight confessions made under non-prosecution agreements.

Decades after his initial five murder convictions, Cottingham claimed to have killed at least 80 to 100 women in different parts of the country in “perfect murders” in 2009, according to a journalist.

Kidnapping, attempted murder, aggravated assault, aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, aggravated sexual assault with a weapon (rape), aggravated sexual assault with a weapon (sodomy), aggravated sexual assault with a weapon (fellatio), possession of a weapon (switchblade knife), and possession of controlled substances (secobarbital, amobarbital, and diazepam) were among the charges listed in Cottingham’s New Jersey indictment.
