Ryōko Akamatsu, a Japanese politician who served as Minister of Education in both the Hata Cabinet and Hosokawa Cabinet, passed away on February 7, 2024, at the age of 94.

Akamatsu held various positions within the labour ministry, now known as the Health, Labour, and Welfare Ministry, including director-general of the women’s bureau.

She played a significant role in advocating for the equal employment opportunity law, which aimed to prevent gender-based discrimination in the workplace.

Additionally, she contributed to international affairs as an ambassador to Uruguay and as a member of the UN Committee on the Elimination of Discrimination against Women. Akamatsu later served as the Minister of Education during the terms of Morihiro Hosokawa and Tsutomu Hata from 1993 to 1994.
