Sam Lim, the eldest of eight siblings in a Malayan Chinese family, was born on June 6, 1961, in Muar, in the Federation of Malaya.
He resided in a home with a leaking roof, little to no power, and no floor for 15 years.
In the 1980s, after passing the Malaysian Certificate Examination and realizing his boyhood desire of being a police officer, he joined the Royal Malaysia Police as a constable.
Yet, he was unable to split his salary with his parents due to the low pay rates and depreciating value of the Malaysian ringgit.
Instead, he spent the next five years as a dolphin trainer at a safari park in Johor, which Lim referred to as his “greatest job ever” after serving with the police for two years.
Afterwards, the safari park shut down, and Lim transitioned into a small business. In 2005, Lim made the decision to relocate from Malaysia to Australia with the intention of retiring there.
Yet soon after his relocation in 2006, Lim decided against retiring and instead pursued his ambition of becoming a police officer by enlisting in the Western Australia Police Force.
